Reports Suggest WWE 2K21 Is Cancelled, New WWE Game Coming

Who else saw that coming?

WWE 2K20 review

Reports have emerged over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend that suggest 2K Games and Visual Concepts have made the decision to cancel the release of WWE 2K21, and just work on WWE 2K22 instead. The news comes from Justin Leeper, who previously worked on the narratives for earlier WWE titles, who published a video on Saturday regarding the matter.

In the video, Leeper alleges that he’s spoken to reliable sources within 2K, and that he can “truly believe that WWE 2K21 has been cancelled”. WWE 2K20 was plagued with glitches and issues when it launched, likely due to the split between Visual Concepts and long-time series developers Yuke’s. Leeper also makes the suggestion that COVID-19 has disrupted development, influencing the decision to cancel WWE 2K21. While some fans will be disappointed to hear there might not be a mainline entry in the series this year, the fact is that WWE 2K needed some time off.

That said, Leeper also mentions that there will be a WWE game of some kind launching this year, stating that “2K is publishing a different kind of WWE game from a different kind of developer that’s not Visual Concepts”. This new game appears to be a departure from the simulation-heavy focus of the current 2K series. Fingers crossed for All-Stars 2, right?

Weirdly though, Leeper says that WWE 2K22 would be released on PS4, Xbox One and “probably PC”. Considering that the next-gen should be out by the end of this year, barring any more severe pandemic related disruptions, it’s odd that the game’s would launching on previous generation hardware. Either way, we’ll see for certain once 2K makes a statement regarding the status of WWE 2K21.
