Report: Warner Bros. Working On Animated Mortal Kombat Film

Could be a big project for the WarnerMedia streaming service.

Mortal Kombat

According to a report from Revenge of the Fans, Warner Bros. is currently working on an animated movie for the popular fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat, with Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter and more set to lend their voice over talents in unconfirmed roles. Side note: I never knew I needed Joel McHale potentially playing Johnny Cage until today.

The project will be developed by the same studio responsible for the excellent DC animated movies, so the project is certainly in good hands, but we’re not entirely convinced of the reported reason why the film is being worked on.

Revenge of the Fans mention that Warner Bros. are launching their own streaming service, WarnerMedia, by the end of the year, so they’re going to need lots of content from the get go to compete with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Disney, Crunchyroll and all the other streaming services available right now.

Animated films are relatively cheap to produce, so making an animated film based on one of the most recognisable gaming franchises in the world is a smart move, especially when it’s being produced by the same people who produced the DC Animated films. That said, another streaming service doesn’t seem like the best thing for the consumer. No one is looking for a reason to lose an extra 5-10 dollars/pounds each month.
