Q&A with Jake Shep of Filthy Threads

Filthy Threads

Young entrepreneur and designer Jake Shep is only 15 but his brand, Filthy Threads, is set to be the next big thing if the momentum they’re enjoying is anything to go by. Having only been established under a year ago and already relishing worldwide success, its only a matter of time until this burgeoning brand goes global.

What inspired you to start the brand?

My main inspiration at the time was brands such as Represent and Hype, who were started by other young students just like myself.

Was if difficult starting a brand independently?

Yeah, it was very difficult but it makes you want to try harder.

What would you say your break through point has been in your career?

I would say the break through point for the brand has been, being approached by stockiest such as 71 Queens, Natives and Rad.co

What would you say is the worst and best part of working in the fashion industry?

I can quiet easily say gaining audience and potential customers was the hardest thing when we first started as we were  based purely online. The best part of working for a brand has been seeing my designs stocked in a number of shops around the world and seeing people I don’t personally know wearing the brand.

Have you got any advice for young entrepreneurs looking to start their own brand?

There are hundreds of “Brands” starting up every month, but only a small percentage are successful. Don’t rush in to things, have a good think of what the brands concept is and what you would like to achieve from it.  I didn’t fully know what I wanted to achieve from Filthy Threads when I first founded it, but now competition is much stronger in starting up a brand, so much more thinking is needed.

What are the plans for Filthy Threads now?

This year has already been very successful for Filthy Threads, we have a number of stockiest that will be proudly stocking us and artists/brands that we will be working with throughout this year!
