The Composter is a furniture item in Project Zomboid that’s used to turn rotten food into compost, helping you to grow vegetables faster. It can be crafted with 5x Planks and 5x Nails with Carpentry level 2.

To use the Composter, players just have to transfer rotten food into it from their inventory. Fresh food will very quickly rot when not refrigerated, with almost all vegetables rotting However, the Composter will only start working after roughly two in-game weeks, as it takes a while for food to decompose.

There is a limit of 50 space in the Composter. Once there is at least 2.5% of compost available, players will be able take compost by using a sack, which you can most easily find in any produce store, like Greene’s Grocery or GigaMart. The sack will then become a Compast Bag and can be used four times before it’s depleted.

When Compost is poured on a plant, it will increase the speed at which it grows, which is helpful for when the electricity goes out. Beware of using too much of this fertiliser, though, as it may cause plant rot.

Players also have a chance of gathering worms from a Composter, though this is a bit more random.
