Project Zomboid: How To Tell You’re Infected With the Zombie Virus

Project Zomboid isn’t a game for the faint-hearted, something that it warns you before you even start playing. You will die in all manner of ways, but the most likely is succumbing to the Knox Infection and joining the zombie horde you’ve been fighting. However, it’s not always clear to tell when you’ve been infected in Project Zomboid as the game doesn’t outright tell you, though there are a few obvious signs.

First of all, it’s important to take into account what kind of injury from a zombie attack you have. While your character is immune to the Knox Infection’s airborne state, it will be transferred to you through a scratch, laceration, or bite. A scratch has a 7% chance of infection, laceration is 25%, and bite is 100%. If you’re bitten, you are infected and will die. If you go on your health screen and see a wound that says “bitten,” start preparing for your next character. There’s no cure.

However, if you’ve been scratched or have a laceration, your chances are a bit better. The Knox Infection doesn’t immediately manifest, but the signs pop up a few hours after initial contact.

The first and most worrying sign of incoming zombificiation is the queasy moodle on the right side of the screen, which looks like a green face that’s ready to spew. This tends to only appear if you’ve eaten rotten food or have contracted an illness, but that should really be a rarity. If it’s accompanied by an anxious moodle like nervous wreck, this almost certifies that you’ve become infected and will slowly die.

As a final indicator that you’re turning into a zombie, the heart on the left hand side that takes you to your health screen should start shaking incessantly and there’s nothing obvious that appears when you open your health screen. You should also notice that your health is constantly dwindling down. Once the health meter runs out, you will die and reanimate as a zombie.

Before that happens, though, you will have 3-4 days of the Knox Infection slowly taking hold. It’s recommended that you use the time to explore new areas that you were too wary of before, as the updated map will also be available for your next character. You may also want to clear out a particular building or area as best you can before you turn to make it easier for your next character, but reconsider taking all of your equipment out in case your character dies and then wanders off when they become a zombie. Or, if you want the quick way out, you can simply drink bleach and won’t reanimate as a zombie.

Project Zomboid is available on PC.
