The Pokémon Company have announced their brand new project, and it’s not Pokémon Let’s Go Johto, as much as that might disappoint a lot of players. It’s called Pokémon Unite and it’s a “free-to-start” MOBA that’s coming to Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, with cross-play support. Yeah, you read that right. Check out the debut trailer below.

Developed in collaboration with Tencent, Unite retains some of the core tenets of your traditional MOBAs, with a top-down camera, a 5v5 format and different characters that utilise varied abilities, but Unite has some differences too. Players will encounter wild Pokémon roaming the map, and it’s your job to “capture” them (see: beat the snot out of them) and deliver them to a goal in order to score points. Whoever has the most points wins.

Unite promises accessible gameplay that also offers plenty of depth, which could mean that the game rivals genre stalwarts like League of Legends, DOTA 2 or SMITE. It’s a unique idea, and one that leverages the unique abilities and personalities of the vast Pokémon roster into something new. No release date information was given during the reveal, though we’ll find out more in the coming months.
