Pokémon Sword and Shield: How To Check Pokémon Friendliness

Turn that frown upside down, Sobble.

Sobble

The bond you share with your Pokémon is a pretty important mechanic in Pokémon Sword and Shield, it even giving you an advantage in battle if you can become best friends with your Pokémon. How do you check how your Pokémon are feeling towards you, though?

There is no meter in Pokémon Sword and Shield that tells you the level of friendliness your Pokémon are feeling towards you, which is a bit of an annoyance.

Instead, you have to go to Hammerlocke and then enter the house to the right of the Pokémon Center.

Pokemon Friendship

Once you’re inside, talk to the little boy on the right. He will weight up how friendly your Pokémon are feeling towards you.

Pokemon Friendship 2

If you have maximum friendship with a Pokémon, he will give you a Best Friends Ribbon which you can then give to the respective Pokémon.

Pokémon

This item is purely ceremonial, the only benefit of it being that your Pokémon’s name in battle will change to [Pokémon Name] the Great Friend.

Having a Pokémon as a best friend means that they will try even harder for you in battle. Their critical hit chance will rise, they may get out of the way of incoming attacks, and even rid themselves of status changes so that they don’t worry you. Your starter Pokémon should become your best friend over time if you keep them in your party constantly.

If you want to increase a Pokémon’s friendliness towards you, you can play with toys with them at a Pokémon Camp, cook them curry, or give them a Soothe Bell as a held item. If you want to evolve Eevee into Espreon, Umbreon, or Sylveon, you need to make sure that they are very friendly towards you.
