Overwatch Fights Back Against Toxicity With “Avoid As Teammate”

“There’s a lot of occasions that happen in the game where you’re frustrated with a teammate, but it’s not necessarily a reportable offence. So perhaps someone is disagreeing with the heroes that you’re picking and they keep saying it in chat, whether it be voice chat or text chat, you know: ‘Hey, I really want you to switch from Hero A on to Hero B, why aren’t you playing them instead?” and you’re starting to get really frustrated and the person’s not harassing you, they’re not saying anything overly negative, but you just don’t want to be grouped with them again. That’s a great example of a chance to use Avoid as Teammate.”

In the most recent developer update, Jeff Kaplan explained the use and benefits, as well as the one or two downsides of the Avoid as Teammate feature that will be implemented into Overwatch as soon as possible.

The new feature will let you pick up to two players in total via any medium where you can see their names, whether it be chat or social menus, and choose to Avoid As Teammate for seven days. You might still see them in an opposing team, but the matchmaker will make sure that you’re not matched in the same team as them.

If a lot of people have chosen to avoid you as a teammate, you’ll get a warning when you log in. Although it won’t count as being reported or anything of that sort, it should serve as a nudge to get you thinking about what you might be doing wrong and why you were avoided as a teammate. It also means that you might have a hard time finding matches for the next seven days, however, while this might be a problem “at levels like Grandmaster in smaller regions and off-hours”, it is very unlikely in the middle skill tiers.

If you build your own team and queue that way, though, you won’t run into any problems, only when the matchmaker has to find players who haven’t chosen to avoid you yet.

If your teammates in Overwatch are letting you down, you might want to give A Way Out a try after reading what we thought about it. If you’re more the kind who wants to shoot some people in single-player mode, you might be interested in what the critics are saying about Far Cry 5.
