Far Cry 5 Reviews – What The Critics Are Saying

Far Cry 5

It’s fair to say that Far Cry 5 is one of 2018’s most anticipated titles. The latest iteration of the long-running series, Far Cry 5 takes the trademark first person shooter action that we know and love and applies it to America’s heartland.

With a new villain in Joseph Seed, a relevance brought about by today’s current political climate and an Arcade Mode that promises infinite replayability, Far Cry 5 has all the makings of a series highlight. Now that reviews have gone live, does it stand up to criticism, or has it been overshadowed by the standard of its predecessors? Let’s take a look at what the critics are saying.

Eurogamer: No Score Given

Far Cry 5 characters

“Far Cry 5 is Far Cry at its least engrossing, clumsiest and most basic, though there’s still just enough going on here to keep a returning fan involved.”

The Guardian: 3/5

Far Cry 5

“It comes close to trying to say something, but never actually does – and it’s far more comfortable when it’s being silly than serious, making you wish that it had committed wholeheartedly to playful satire rather than spreading its bets.”

“Always rewards, it will eat your weekends and snack on the evenings.”

Game Informer: 7.5/10

Far Cry 5

“Once the luster of the new setting and co-op companionship wears thin, however, you’re left with an experience that’s familiar to a fault.”

Far Cry 5 sniper

“Far Cry 5 boasts a wonderfully harmonious flow to its adventure, with its smart changes to exploration, discovery, and progression distinctly bolstering the enjoyment of creatively engaging and experimenting with its spectacular open world.”

VentureBeat: 85/100

Far Cry 5 dog

“Far Cry 5 is mechanically sound and varied. You’ll find something that entertains you, and Ubisoft has nailed all of the underlying elements of character and world progression. At the same time, it squanders some decent writing because it can’t decide what kind of game it is.”

Destructoid: 7.5/10

Far Cry 5

“Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.”

Metro: 8/10

Far Cry 5

“The best Far Cry yet and one of the best open world shooters of any kind, with an impressive variety of missions and non-linear structure.”

IGN (Review In Progress): 8.9/10

Far Cry 5

“While the Far Cry formula remains addictive, there is a certain amount of sameness to it. […] It’s still a blast to play, and the brutal combat remains ever so satisfying no matter where you are (thanks in part to the amusingly unrealistic ragdoll death animations) but Far Cry 5 doesn’t feel like a revelation because it doesn’t do a lot to set itself apart.”

Windows Central: 5/5

Far Cry 5

“I would have liked to have seen Far Cry 5 change things up a little bit more, like Assassin’s Creed Origins did, but at this point I’m truly scraping the barrel of things to complain about. Far Cry 5 is a cover-to-cover classic, fans of Far Cry, or open world sandbox games in general, cannot ignore. Buy this.”

Wccftech: 9.1/10

Far Cry 5

“If you’re wondering whether bringing the madness to our doorstep, making the entire campaign co-op and including an impressive toolbox to create new levels and missions while still retaining that visceral gunplay the series is known for keeps Far Cry 5 fresh and worth playing on Day One, my answer is: yes, absolutely.”

Far Cry 5

“[Far Cry 5] is an amusing way to spend a few hours, but it is a missed opportunity to explore what could have been potent subject matter.”

From these reviews, the story of Far Cry 5 appears to be more of the same from the franchise, for better or worse depending on what you expected from it. The plot and antagonists have been particularly criticised, which is shame considering the series has given us Vaas Montenegro and Pagan Min.

Far Cry 5 will be released tomorrow worldwide for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Will you be entering Hope County, or will you give it a miss? Sound off in the comments below, and look out for our review in the next few days.
