Brendan Fraser takes home the Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for his performance in The Whale. This is his first Oscar nomination and first win. Fraser won out against Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living). The award was presented by Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry.

During his speech, Fraser was very emotional, thanking director Darren Aronofsky for throwing him a “creative lifeline” and taking him on for The Whale. In the film, Fraser plays Charlie, a house-bound 600-pound English teacher trying to salvage his relationship with his daughter Ellie, played by Sadie Sink.

The win comes as no surprise, since he was the favourite to win and had won the Best Actor award at the SAG awards and Critics Choice awards. There was the slim possibility of Butler swooping in last minute to take home the prize, since he had won the Golden Globe and BAFTA award for Best Actor, but Fraser won out in the end.

Brendan Fraser has such a varied filmography, from action star to sexy heartthrob, the man can do it all, and it’s truly inspirational to see him take the top prize for a performance he poured so much heart into.
