Report: Nintendo’s Switch Remasters of Mario Classics To Be Bundled

And a new Paper Mario game to boot.

A host of reports and rumours began to circulate yesterday that Nintendo are working on remastering various 3D Super Mario titles for release on the Nintendo Switch, along with a new Paper Mario game, all in celebration of Mario 35th Anniversary. The original report came courtesy of VGC, who broke the news yesterday, but more details have emerged since then.

VentureBeat have reported that the 3D Mario games would be bundled together in a collection, with a title to the effect of Super Mario All-Stars 2. Reports from both Eurogamer and Gematsu combined also confirmed that the collection would include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. As for Super Mario 3D World, most reports from the already mentioned sources have corroborated the idea that it’d be receiving a Deluxe edition of some kind, with plenty of new content.

As for Paper Mario, VentureBeat’s report suggested that the game would be “a return to that franchise’s roots”, putting it more in line with the RPG-style entries of the N64 and GameCube. Considering more recent Paper Mario games haven’t been as well received, perhaps looking to the ideas of the past will be a good move for the series, though I imagine many would rather just see Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remastered first.

Nintendo were supposedly planning to unveil this bombshell news during E3 2020, in time for the 35th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros. in September. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of E3, but we can still probably expect a mammoth Nintendo Direct in June. At least we’ll have that to look forward to. Are you excited for any of these potential announcements, or are you still wondering why they haven’t brought Wind Waker HD to the Switch? I’m still waiting for an F-Zero GX, but let us know your thoughts in the comments.
