New Switch Games of March 2022

1. FAR: Changing Tides | March 1st, 2022

FAR Changing Tides
FAR Changing Tides

Developer: Okomotive
Publisher: Frontier Foundry

In 2018, players set out across a dried-out seabed in the wake of civilization’s downfall. FAR: Lone Sails was a unique atmospheric experience from Okomotive, and the developer is back again with Changing Tides. This time, there’s plenty of water to traverse as players step into the role of Toe, an unlikely hero who wakes up in a literal water-world.

As players set sail to find some semblance of safety and civilization, they’ll battle the elements and the dangers of the high seas. The hazardous environment will break down Toe’s vessel, requiring players to work hard to pick up the pieces and keep it afloat. Changing Tides challenges players with puzzles, tasks, and the perils of a water-logged world that spans from the surface to the murky depths.

2. Triangle Strategy | March 4th, 2022

Triangle Strategy

Developer: Artdink, Square Enix
Publisher: Nintendo

Don’t worry – you won’t have to be a fan of geometry to dive into Square Enix’s latest RPG, Triangle Strategy. You will, however, want to enjoy strategic gameplay as you take control of a band of warriors stuck in the middle of three warring nations. In this HD-2D adventure, players will travel across beautifully rendered 3D environments, making critical decisions and battling in high-stakes skirmishes.

Every choice made affects how the game plays out, lending to the possibility for multiple playthroughs. Convictions change, as does the support provided by the people of Serenoa. And as support changes, so, too, will player strategy. Like any traditional Square Enix game, Triangle Strategy boasts an emotional and engaging story with deep, meticulous gameplay.

3. Ashwalkers | March 10th, 2022

Ashwalkers
Ashwalkers

Developer: Nameless XIII
Publisher: Dear Villagers, 24 Entertainment

The premiere game of developer Nameless XIII, Ashwalkers already stands out with a black and white art style that captures the bleakness of the post-apocalyptic world. Surviving the wasteland that was once a bustling world takes cunning and skill, and players will need to make the best choices to keep their party alive. Manage resources, harvest supplies, and keep everyone alive – at least, as best as you can.

Spatterings of red pop from the grim environment, indicating battles past and dangers that lie in wait. Can you make the right choice to avoid being the next splotch of blood? It won’t be easy, especially with your party’s mental and physical health on the line. The deeper players get into this dilapidated world, the more difficult their decisions will become. And based on how they play the game, they’ll reach one of 34 different endings.

4. Aztech: Forgotten Gods | March 10th, 2022

Aztech Forgotten Gods

Developer: Lienzo
Publisher: Lienzo

There’s something exciting about exploring civilizations and legends long lost to time. God of War, Hades, and Dante’s Inferno are just a smattering of titles that send us to distant lands and times. On March 10, Aztech will join their ranks as developer Lienzo introduces us to Achtli, a powerful young woman with a vendetta against the Forgotten Gods.

Rather than send us deep into the past, however, Aztech launches us into a futuristic Mesoamerican world, which takes its inspiration from the Aztec cities of yesteryear. The big-armed heroine takes on colossal fiends that mark milestones along her perilous journey of discovery. The 3D platformer is action-packed, vibrant, and sure to draw players in with its immense heart and emotional story.

5. Chocobo GP | March 10th, 2022

Chocobo GP
Chocobo GP

Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix

Nintendo Switch owners looking for something to tide them over until the next Mario Kart entry may have found their answer. Characters from the Final Fantasy and Chocobo series hit the tracks in a fast-paced competitive kart racer that puts a fantastical spin on Mario Kart. Jump behind the wheel as Titan, Gilgamesh, Asura, Ifrit, Cloud, Squall, Cid, and many more in a race across tracks from both of Square Enix’s franchises.

Magicite replaces Item Boxes as players call upon powers like Thunder, Quake, Bahamut, Ultima, and Haste to slow the opposition and leave them in the dirt. Chocobo GP features a cutesy art style that best fits the tone of the chaotic racer, but that doesn’t take away from the stunning visuals that give the experience life. Some may question why we need a Final Fantasy kart racer. However, the only real question is: “Why did it take this long?”

6. Phantom Breaker: Omnia | March 15th, 2022

Phantom Breaker: Omnia
Phantom Breaker: Omnia

Developer: MAGES, Inc., GameLoop, Inc.
Publisher: Rocket Panda Games

In 2013, Phantom Breaker: Extra for the PS3 and Xbox 360 built upon the fast-paced fighting of 2011’s arcade fighter, Phantom Breaker. Now, the update to the original is receiving its own update with Phantom Breaker: Omnia. Still with us?

More than just a simple visual upgrade, Omnia makes some noticeable changes to Extra, including adding two more characters, a new fighting style, a remixed soundtrack, and the option to play through the stories of the original Phantom Breaker and Extra. Players that had issues with character balance in previous installments should find some improvements to help level out the gameplay. Whether dialing in for the first time or revisiting Phantom Breaker after umpteen years, you’ll find the experience fresh, vibrant, and perfect for on-the-go gaming.

7. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax | March 17th, 2022

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Developer: Arc System Works, ATLUS
Publisher: SEGA

March 2022 is a good month for fighting fans. And for players that love revisiting games from generations past. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was originally released in arcades in 2013 and later ported to the PS3 and 360 before receiving the Nintendo Switch treatment. While there isn’t new content coming with this port, Ultimax was enough of an enjoyable sequel to Persona 4 Arena that it will still be worth sinking time into despite being eight years old.

Ultimax takes place immediately after its predecessor, set two months after Persona 4 and three years after the third entry. A total of 21 fighters jump into the fray to unravel the mystery behind the unusual red fog or bolster the forces of evil. Persona abilities strengthen each fighter while a new S-Hold gives each character a charge attack. Players will also be able to choose “Shadow Types” of each fighter, which focus on skills and a risky offensive playstyle that favors attacks over defense.

8. Rune Factory 5 | March 22nd, 2022

Rune Factory 5
Rune Factory 5

Developer: Hakama, Inc.
Publisher: Marvelous (XSEED)

It may have taken nine years for Rune Factory fans to have received the fifth sequel, but the wait was certainly worth it. The visually striking RPG came to Japan in 2021 and is making its way onto the Switch to send players worldwide to the sleepy town of Rigbarth. When a series of strange events start to alter the effects of the runes governing humanity and nature, SEED sends its best and brightest members to deal with the potential threat causing the disturbance.

Monsters and sleepy villages aren’t new to the RPG scene, but Rune Factory 5 promises plenty to offer a unique, fast-paced experience. With Rigbarth citizens at their side, players will battle monsters, perform earth-shaking link attacks, and bring balance to the world. Fighting doesn’t solve everything, though, so you’ll pick up arm equipment to help Rigbarth raise crops, tame monsters, and keep the people well-fed, safe, and happy.

9. Kirby and the Forgotten Land | March 25th, 2022

Kirby And The Forgotten Land
Kirby And The Forgotten Land

Developer: HAL Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo

Everybody’s favorite pink puffball is back, and this time he’s traveling through a land forgotten by time. In his first foray in 3D platforming, Kirby finds himself washing up on the shores of The Forgotten Land, a post-apocalyptic world home to the Waddle Dees. As he gains his bearings, Kirby learns that The Beast Pack is kidnapping the inhabitants of The Forgotten Land. Luckily for them, the cuddly hero can still copy enemy skills and use them to battle back the villainous forces. Drill and Ranger abilities add new traversal and combat capabilities that give Kirby what’s needed to save The Forgotten Land.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land takes advantage of the long-lost art of local co-op play as a second play can jump in as the Bandana Waddle Dee. Together, you’ll explore the colorful landscapes and visit Waddle Dee Town to participate in casual games and compare leaderboard scores.

What better way to celebrate Kirby’s 30th anniversary than his first 3D platformer?
