Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a pretty good game, one that you can lose yourself in for hours and hours as you rotate a well over and over again without understanding why it can’t be straight (please someone explain to me). It is also, however, a little light on features Animal Crossing fans have come to expect as standard, which includes constant reprimanding by a crank mole.
Mr. Resetti is a series mainstay who pops up to tell you off for not saving before you reset or switch off your console. Always on the verge of killing you with an axe, he is a fan favourite that’s nowhere to be seen, apart from as feedback for your island’s rating and also on a rather fetching construction sign. He is a big miss and apparently a casualty of the modern age.
Now, though, with the 10.00 Switch firmware update, we have had the strongest hint that he may be making a proper return.
Along with button remapping, downloaded game storage transfers, and the ability to bookmark up to 300 news items (cor, what a treat), Nintendo have also released a bunch of new Animal Crossing avatars for your profile.
Chief among them? The king himself.

While it’s not exactly confirmation, Mr. Resetti getting a new model just for an avatar seems to be a pretty large hint. He is currently believed to be behind the rescue services that players can call when they get stuck, but that is not exactly befitting his stature as you never see him. Couldn’t Don do that job instead, freeing him up to do other stuff?
There are a few other features missing from New Horizons that are most likely making a return. Brewster’s cafe and Redd’s gallery look like they are coming to the museum, so why can’t Mr. Resetti make a physical return?
A man of his talents could no doubt find something to do on your island. Maybe he could work the day shift for Blathers? Become a turnip bouncer for Daisy Mae? Or perhaps he could turn up on your birthday and threaten to reset your life if you keep time travelling?
He deserves better.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. From our review:
“New Horizons is a great continuation of an already fantastic series of games, and paying back Tom Nook’s loan has never been so fun.”
