5 Biggest New Movies of February 2024 – Chocolate Hearts & A Little Action

What movies will you be enjoying this Valentine's day?

January is always a deadzone for movies, so it feels good to finally dust off January’s ashes and start afresh in February. Since February is the month of love, we of course need to have some romantic films. Don’t despair if you’re not into the romance genre, it’s a pretty diverse month, with some action options, though of course romance dominates.

Here are the biggest new movies of February 2024.

1. Argylle | February 2nd, 2024

Argylle was on so many anticipated movies lists for 2024, and it’s easy to see why. A cast comprising of Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill? Yes please. Howard plays Elly Conway, the author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, who lives a quiet life with her cat. But when the plots of Elly’s novels begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, her life is turned upside down. Elly finds herself racing across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

Unfortunately, the film’s current reviews aren’t exactly glowing, standing at a lukewarm 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics praise the fight sequences, but most have labelled it a bloated mess, with the twists and turns not doing much for the story.

2. Fitting In | February 2nd, 2024

Being a teenager isn’t the easiest thing, so when Lindy (Maddie Ziegler) finds herself diagnosed with MRKH syndrome, her life gets even more complicated. MRKH syndrome essentially means that she’s born with a small or even absent uterus, and a shortened vagina. Lindy wants what every teenage girls wants – love, romance, and to hopefully lose her virginity. Losing your virginity is awkward enough, but now Lindy will have to navigate it with the add-on of MRKH syndrome.

Current reviews praise Ziegler’s performance, calling it “powerful” and “fearless”. We’ve been getting really great coming of age films of late, and I think this will be another one to add to the mix.

3. Lisa Frankenstein | February 9th, 2024

Lisa Frankenstein is what one would term a horror rom-com, and it’s a spin on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – but of course you knew that. Set in the 1980s, the movie follows Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who reanimates a handsome corpse (Cole Sprouse) and attempts to shape him into her ideal man. Considering that Diablo Cody is the writer of the film (she penned Juno and Jennifer’s Body), I think we can expect something darkly funny and transgressive.

If you’re not really into the cheesy, gooey side of rom-coms, then this might be right up your alley – a treat to be enjoyed for Valentine’s day.

4. Madame Web | February 14th, 2024

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) is a paramedic who develops clairvoyant powers. It feels kind of like Final Destination, where she sees the bad stuff happen and then has a chance to change the outcome. Through her visions, Cassandra realises there’s a connection between her and three other women, Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Julia Carpenter (Sweeney). They will have to deal with a Spider-Man-like villain Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who is out to kill all of them because of who they become in the future.

Considering all the Sony live-action films post MCU have been focused on characters tangentially related to Spider-Man, like Venom and Morbius, it’s great to have a film focused on Spider people. What a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

5. This Is Me … Now: A Love Story | February 16th, 2024

Jennifer Lopez had a documentary called Halftime in 2022, about her preparation for her Superbowl performance. This Is Me … Now: A Love Story is a visual odyssey based around J.Lo’s latest studio album. In the film, she candidly talks about her love life, all the failed romances, and what love has meant to her all these years. There’s some real life elements woven into the story, but based on the trailer, it does seem like an autobiographical musical of sorts.

This seemed like the next natural step for J.Lo, since her previous film Marry Me had so much of her own music woven in. It’s a unique premise, and I’m excited to see how it turns out. J.Lo singing and dancing for an hour? Sign me up.
