As we all know, June is peak movie season. Summer is in full swing, and if you wish to take a break from the beach to enjoy the cold respite of the cinema, there are some promising options. Even though this list is about the biggest movies in June, I wanted to highlight some other movies that sound good but didn’t make the list. Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie No Hard Feelings looks pretty hilarious, and might be an option if you want something less child-friendly. There’s also a new Transformers movie, directed by Steven Caple Jr., the man who directed Creed II.
Like I said, June is buzzing with variety, so here are the biggest new movies of 2023.
New Movies of June 2023
1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse| June 2nd, 2023
If you don’t know, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the second film in a trilogy. The third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to release next year. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller realised there was more story to tell and a decision was made to broaden it into a trilogy.
This sequel involves Miles Morales encountering even more Spider-people than before. From the trailer, it appears that he’ll have to make a tough choice, between saving a loved one or thousands of other people. The animation looks as crisp and dynamic as ever, and it’s almost guranteed that this film will be a hit with critics and audiences alike.
2. The Boogeyman | June 2nd, 2023
God bless Stephen King, because barely a year goes by without a King adaptation sweeping into cinemas. This month’s offering is director Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman. The story follows a grieving family trying to get over the death of their loved one. The father Will, played by Chris Messina, attends to patients in his home. He gets a visit from Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian), who claims that the boogeyman killed all his children. Messina is skeptical and calls the police, but now it appears that the presence that haunted Lester’s family is now haunting Will and his family.
The film was initially slated to get a streaming release, but after a positive test screening, and praise from King himself, they decided to do a theatrical roll-out instead. Let’s see if they made the right decision. But if King liked it, then who are we to say otherwise?
3. The Flash | June 16th, 2023
The Flash is offering its take on Flashpoint, an event that is the result of Barry going back in time to save his mother. If you know your comics, you’ll know that his mother Nora was murdered by the Reverse Flash, who did it so that Barry could become the Flash and he his inverse. In the trailer, we see Barry broaching the subject with Bruce (Ben Affleck is once again reprising his role), and while Bruce is content to leave things as they are, Barry clearly isn’t mature enough to understand that messing with the past can have consequences.
The Flash is one of the last movies before the DCU reboot, there’s still Blue Beetle and the Aquaman sequel. Currently, there appears to be no overlap between the old slate and the new one, but if The Flash does well, who knows what that could lead to? Though Ezra Miller’s problematic behaviour is leaving many feeling that maybe a reboot is a good thing.
4. Elemental | June 16th, 2023
Currently, Elemental stands at 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 11 reviews. This isn’t a strong opening, given the usual high praise handed out to Pixar movies. Movies like Inside Out, Soul, Luca all performed really well with the critics, so Elemental’s lukewarm beginning doesn’t bode well.
The events of the movie are set in Element City, where fire, water, land and air residents live together. The story introduces us to Ember, a fire resident, who strikes up an unconventional friendship with Wade, a water resident. Their relationship shifts their perspectives about the world they live in. Based on this, it does seem that the movie is trying to touch on topics like race in a more child-friendly way. The animated film looks gorgeous though, so hopefully it will gain more favour outside of Cannes.
5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny | June 30th, 2023
Indiana Jones has gotten a lot of attention recently, due to the lackluster first reviews that have been released since Cannes. At the time of this article, the film has a rating of 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 45 reviews. Many of the critics felt like it wasn’t a fitting send-off for Harrison Ford, with some calling it dull and exhausting. Yikes. There are some good reviews too, so we’ll get a better sensing once more reviews come in.
In the film, we find Indy enjoying a quiet life, still working as a professor. The movie deals with Indy’s history with Nazis, and from the trailer, things weave between the past and present, leaving many to speculate that some element of time travel may be involved. It’ll be great to see Harrison Ford take up the whip again, even if the movie doesn’t live up to its predecessors.
