15 Biggest New Movies of 2024

What's your most anticipated movie of 2024?

Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two

Looking at the upcoming 2024 movie slate, it’s sad to say that most of the movies on this list are either sequels or reboots/remakes of existing IP. Thank God for Luca Guadagnino and David Leitch, who are both bringing something fresh to the table.

To let you know which movies you should be looking forward to, we’ve compiled this list of upcoming new movies you can expect to release in 2024, from reboots to sequels to superheroes and everything in-between.

New Movies of 2024

1. Mean Girls | January 12th, 2024

Mean Girls 2024

According to the movie trailer, this isn’t your mother’s Mean Girls, which is a bit of an insult since Mean Girls wasn’t that long ago. While the story, characters and practically everything else is the same, this new Mean Girls is a musical. There’s been a Broadway version of Mean Girls since 2018, and now, we’re getting a movie musical based on that.

The reception to this film is bound to be divisive. There is skepticism of course, since many feel we don’t need another version of the same narrative, and those of us who grew up with the original Mean Girls feel very protective of it. However, it’s also nice to actually get to see how the musical version would look like on the big screen, especially for those of us who didn’t get to see it. I do think curiosity will prevail and considering the January dead zone when it comes to movies, this might be the only thing worth seeing that month.

2. Lisa Frankenstein | February 9th, 2024

Lisa Frankenstein
Lisa Frankenstein

Lisa Frankenstein is what one would term a horror rom-com, and it’s a spin on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – but of course you knew that. Set in the 1980s, the movie follows Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who reanimates a handsome corpse (Cole Sprouse) and attempts to shape him into her ideal man. Considering that Diablo Cody is the writer of the film (she penned Juno and Jennifer’s Body), I think we can expect something darkly funny and transgressive.

If you’re not really into the cheesy, gooey side of rom-coms, then this might be right up your alley – a treat to be enjoyed for Valentine’s day.

3. Madame Web | February 14th, 2024

Madame Web
Madame Web

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) is a paramedic who develops clairvoyant powers. It feels kind of like Final Destination, where she sees the bad stuff happen and then has a chance to change the outcome. Through her visions, Cassandra realises there’s a connection between her and three other women, Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Julia Carpenter (Sweeney). They will have to deal with a Spider-Man-like villain Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who is out to kill all of them because of who they become in the future.

Considering all the Sony live-action films post MCU have been focused on characters tangentially related to Spider-Man, like Venom and Morbius, it’s great to have a film focused on Spider people. What a way to celebrate Valentine’s day.

4. The Fall Guy | March 1st, 2024

The Fall Guy
The Fall Guy

This movie has got everything you could ever want: David Leitch as the director, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as romantic leads, tons of action and comedy. Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a professional stuntman. Colt and Jody (Blunt) had a romance going on, but Colt left her high and dry. He’s the last person she expected to see on her movie set, yet she can’t deny the romantic chemistry that’s still there.

Colt is then offered a chance to make it up to her. Her leading man Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has gone missing, and Colt’s been tasked to bring him back to salvage Jody’s movie. So now the stuntman will have to handle things in the real world. Is he up to the task? I mean, it’s Ryan Gosling so of course he’ll succeed – it’s a no brainer.

5. Dune: Part Two | March 15th, 2024

Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two was meant to ignite theatres in 2023, but was pushed back to 2024 due to the SAG-ASTRA strike. We had to wait a little bit more, but hopefully, this second movie is well worth the wait.

The first Dune focused on the Atreides family, who are given the rulership of Arrakis by the Emperor. The movie ended with Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) as the sole survivors of the Atreides clan. Those familiar with Frank Herbert’s novel will have a rough idea of what this second movie will focus on, but to those of that don’t, Dune: Part Two will cover Paul’s rise to power among the Fremen. He plans to lead them in rebellion against the Harkonnens, which will hopefully result in the liberation of Arrakis, the overthrow of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, and the installation of Paul as the new ruler of the known universe.

6. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire | March 29th, 2024

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

In an interview with Newsweek, Dan Aykroyd has set expectations high for this next Ghostbusters film. He mentioned that the new film deals with themes like loss, betrayal, and forgiveness even deeper and “more emotionally” than the previous Ghostbusters movies. He also teased the “great scares and effects” that await.

In this movie, the new Ghostbusters team up with the old guard, who have developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when there’s an evil force that begins wreaking havoc, they need to work together to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age – hence the title.

7. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire | April 12th, 2024

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The Monsterverse continues its expansion with this next entry in the franchise. In this latest film, we’ll find out more of the history and origins of both Kong and Godzilla. We’ll be headed back to Skull Island as well, to learn more about its mysteries. It does seem like a team-up between Godzilla and Kong against another threat. Director Adam Wingard, who directed Godzilla vs. Kong, is back in the director’s chair for this one, making him the first director to direct more than one project in the Monsterverse.

So if you’re a fan of these titans, this film would be a must-watch for you.

8. Challengers | April 26th, 2024

Challengers
Challengers

Just like Dune: Part Two, Challengers was supposed to be released in 2023, but its release date was pushed to 2024 due to the SAG-ASTRA strike. 2024 is a busy year for Zendaya, who has two movies in back to back months – Dune: Part Two of course and this movie.

The release of the official trailer for Challengers sent the world into a frenzy, especially since it featured a love triangle of sorts between the characters played by Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. It also inspired tons of Tom Holland memes. The film follows Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya), a professional tennis player who turned to coaching after a devastating injury halted her career.

Considering that she has the blueprints of what it takes to succeed on the tennis court, she trains her husband Art (Faist) to become a tennis star just like she was. Their life is full of glitz and glamour until he falls into a losing streak. To help him snap out of it, Tashi signs him up for a match against his greatest opponent, Patrick (O’Connor) – his ex-best friend and her ex-boyfriend.

9. Deadpool 3 | May 3rd, 2024

Deadpool 3
Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds knows how to keep things exciting for Deadpool fans. The world went wild when we found out that Hugh Jackman will resume his role as Wolverine in this third installment. Reynolds also mentioned that the Wolverine character they pitched to Jackman is a bit of a departure from the Wolverine he played before, which is why Jackman was interested to return. This will probably be his final performance as the character though.

Deadpool 3 is now officially a part of the MCU, so you know there are going to be a ton of fun tongue-in-cheek references. The actual plot isn’t known yet, though there are some rumours about the TVA being involved. I guess we’ll find out more once we get a trailer.

10. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | May 24th, 2024

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

As the world fell, young Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. As Immortan Joe and the Warload Dementus spar for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

It will be exciting to see Taylor-Joy take on the character, as well as get to hear Hemsworth use his actual accent for the first time.

11. Ballerina | June 7th, 2024

Ballerina
Ballerina

As everyone still contemplates whether or not John Wick really died at the end of John Wick 4, here’s a spin-off to keep us entertained in the meantime. Set in between John Wick 3 and 4, Ballerina is about a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Familiar characters from the John Wick universe are set to appear, like John Wick himself and Continental manager Winston. Ana de Armas has been cast as the protagonist Rooney, and should do a magnificent job considering how great she is in No Time to Die.

We’ll also get to learn more about John Wick’s origins, seeing as how both him and Rooney trained at the same place.

12. Inside Out 2 | June 14th, 2024

Inside Out 2
Inside Out 2

In the sequel, we follow up with he original emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale) and Disgust (Liza Lapira), who have been running a successful operation, until Anxiety (Maya Hawke) shows up. They’re not sure how to deal with her – it’s a code red situation – and things are thrown into disarray even more when they realise that she’s not alone.

Inside Out received positive critical reception upon its release, scoring a high 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its gorgeous animation and how insightful it was in portraying the complicated feelings children have to deal with. 2023 hasn’t been the best year for Pixar/Disney, so hopefully this sequel will bring good tidings to the Mouse House in 2024.

13. Joker: Folie à Deux | Oct 4th, 2024

Joker: Folie à Deux
Joker: Folie à Deux

Todd Philips’ Joker was so popular and did so well at the box office, so of course we’re getting a sequel. Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance, will resume his role as Arthur Fleck. Joining him is Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, which makes sense since the previous movie ended with Arthur in Arkham Asylum. Also, this sequel is a musical, which will be a shift in tone from the more somber, serious notes of the first movie.

There isn’t much news besides that, but obviously the movie will be exploring the volatile relationship between Harley Quinn and Joker, and it remains to be seen how much of it will be true to its comic book origins.

14. Gladiator 2 | November 22nd, 2024

Paul Mescal in Normal People
Paul Mescal in Normal People

For years we thought a sequel to Gladiator would never happen. After all, it’s been over 20 years since the first film graced our cinema screens. So what a plot twist it is to discover we’re getting a sequel 24 years later, with director Ridley Scott at the helm once more.

Paul Mescal will play the character Lucius from the original film. Lucius is the nephew of the Commodus and the son of Commodus’s sister, Lucilla. He grew to admire Russell Crowe’s character Maximus in the first film, and decided to be a heroic gladiator like him rather than royalty. It is actually Mescal’s role in Normal People that put him on Scott’s radar, and the rest is history.

There’s much known plot-wise, but we can safely assume that Lucius will battle it out in fighting pits. It’s not a Gladiator movie without those scenes.

15. Wicked Part 1 | November 27th, 2024

Wicked Part 1
Wicked Part 1

Why is the movie version of the Wicked musical two movies when the musical is in one seating? Stephen Schwartz, the songwriter for the film, said that there’s just too much content to cram into one film without compromising the story. The two movies are set to release a year apart, so I guess it’s not a very long wait.

If you’ve watched the original musical and the books by Gregory Maguire on these characters, you will know that Wicked is basically about the witches from The Wizard of Oz, an exploration of their back story and how both of them got to this point. The cast is truly fantastic, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba. Jonathan Bailey, of Bridgerton fame, with play Elphaba’s love, Fiyero. Director Jon M. Chu also announced Jeff Goldblum’s casting as the Wizard of Oz.

November 2024 will definitely be a treat for musical fans.
