Let's go, LEGO.

If you’re reading this, well done. You’ve managed to survive the overwhelming amount of games that launched in February and March. Between the likes of Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, Sifu, Horizon Forbidden West, Total War: Warhammer 3, WWE 2K22 and so much more, it’s been a good couple of months for gamers, but the hits aren’t done yet.

Truthfully, April 2022 is a bit of a quieter month for new games than you might be used to given recent form, but that doesn’t mean that the games launching this month aren’t worthy of your time. From adaptations to sports sims, medieval fantasy to remasters and remakes, there’s a good selection of games to sink your teeth into. Here are the biggest new games of April 2022 that you should know about.

The Biggest New Games of April 2022

1. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | April 5th, 2022

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Developer: TT Games
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch

The LEGO games have made a name for themselves as some of the most enjoyable and relaxing games for all the family. No matter what huge IP you love, their licensed games have covered a huge range of franchises to ensure there’s something for everyone. Still, there’s no bigger franchise than Star Wars, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is perhaps the biggest game the developers have ever made.

As you would expect from the name, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga compiles all the major films from the franchise, from episodes 1-9, and adapts them into the trademark LEGO comedy style. While most of the films have been adapted already, this new game is the first time players can revisit the plot of The Rise of Skywalker, though why you would want to revisit that one is anyone’s guess.

2. MLB The Show 22 | April 5th, 2022

Developer: San Diego Studio
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch

While you might think of FIFA or Madden when you hear the term “sports sim”, one of the best sports franchises going is MLB The Show, the gold standard when it comes to emulating baseball. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, it’s hard not to admire the special edition version of the game, which features a manga style cover of star Shohei Ohtani as created by Takashi Okazaki, the guy who illustrated Afro Samurai.

As for the actual game, MLB The Show 22 will continue the same tradition started with last year’s entry, by launching day one on Xbox Game Pass. It’s mind boggling that a Sony game would come to Xbox Game Pass, but here we are. The Show 22 is also coming to the Nintendo Switch, though it should be noted that only ninth generation consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X | S will be able to use features like the Stadium Creator.

3. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition | April 7th, 2022

Chrono Cross

Developer: Square Enix, D4 Enterprise
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Square Enix have gotten into the habit in recent years of porting some of their classic RPGs to modern platforms, which is great because their library is filled to the brim with amazing titles. We’re still waiting for the day where The Bouncer is ported to new hardware, but until that day (which will happen), we’ll happily settle for Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, an updated release of a genuine all-time great.

An RPG that was incredibly ahead of its time, Chrono Cross featured a story that travelled across time and space, as the player moved between two parallel worlds. Along the way, you could recruit up to 40 different characters into your party, but The Radical Dreamers Edition has been updated to include better visuals and music, and even includes the Radical Dreamers visual novel that previously never saw a release outside of Japan.

4. The House Of The Dead: Remake | April 7th, 2022

Developer: MegaPixel Studio
Publisher: Forever Entertainment
Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

When it comes to arcade games, two spring to mind. Unfortunately, Time Crisis seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth in recent years, but SEGA seemingly haven’t forgotten about The House of the Dead. While the series has been on a huge hiatus for a long time, MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment have taken on the mantle of remaking the first House of the Dead for the Nintendo Switch.

As you’d expect, The House of the Dead: Remake is a massive update to the original game, with overhauled visuals and music, while retaining the classic arcade gameplay that the series has become famous for. The Switch port isn’t an accident either, as MegaPixel Studio have updated the game to include gyroscopic controls, along with a “Cowboy” mode where players can dual wield Joy-Cons like twin revolvers.

5. MotoGP 22 | April 21st, 2022

Developer: Milestone
Publisher: Milestone
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch

For motorbike fans, there’s no greater competition than MotoGP, and for those people, there’s no better racing game game than the official MotoGP racing game series. MotoGP 22 continues the long-running series’ incredible knack for effectively emulating the competition, while still being an enjoyable experience for those who just want to see virtual bikes go fast. Whether a casual fan or a die-hard fan, MotoGP 22 is worth checking out.

MotoGP 22 will include over 120 riders, with everyone from the 2022 season across MotoGP, Moto 2 and Moto 3, along with 70 historical riders from throughout the years. There’s plenty of modes to enjoy, including a career, a management mode and even a historical mode that chronicles the 2009 season with 50 minutes of documentary footage, but if you’re new to the series, the revamped tutorial and MotoGP Academy should help you get started.

6. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale | April 26th, 2022

Developer: NeocoreGames
Publisher: NeocoreGames
Platform(s): PC

The good news about King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is that, if you’re really desperate to play it, you can right now. The game’s currently available in early access, but the full version is scheduled to drop on Steam on April 26th. The better news is that, as tactical RPGs go, King Arthur could be one of the finest, effectively blending modern gameplay and combat with a story that cleverly reinterprets Arthurian legend.

Instead of playing as Arthur himself, you control Sir Mordred, his fated nemesis. In a climactic battle, both of you were killed, but neither of you are dead. Arthur was resurrected on the Isle of Avalon, but something went wrong and foul corruption is now spreading throughout Britannia. The Lady of the Lake herself has now brought you back to do the job once again, and this time, make it permanent.

7. The Serpent Rogue | April 26th, 2022

The Serpent Rogue

Developer: Sengi Games
Publisher: Team17
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch

If you didn’t get your fill of dark medieval fantasy from King Arthur, The Serpent Rogue could be a real winner. Instead of playing as a king, knight or someone of royal stature, you’ll play as the mysterious Warden, a travelling alchemist who has to contend with the titular Serpent Rogue, an evil force intent on spreading malice across the land. With smarts, resources and a bit of ingenuity, you’ll stand against the rising tide.

As an action adventure/RPG, you’ll travel across the land and complete quests for people while exploring, in turn earning resources that you can use to create a variety of potions. Essentially, you’re experimenting with potions to find something that can take out the Serpent Rogue. If that’s not enough to convince you, there’s even the option to brew potions that allow you to shapeshift into a dog. Game of the year for that alone.

8. Nintendo Switch Sports | April 29th, 2022

Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

Even if you’re not the biggest Nintendo Wii fan in the world, the odds are likely that you’ve played Wii Sports in some form or fashion. It’s one of the most memorable games ever made, so it’s no real surprise that Nintendo would attempt to create a follow-up for the Nintendo Switch, and the aptly titled Nintendo Switch Sports is just that. If you want to recreate the tense bowling or tennis battles of yesteryear once again, now’s the time.

Regrettably, Nintendo Switch Sports isn’t just a straight update of Wii Sports, as Boxing is nowhere to be seen while Golf is being saved for a free update later in the year. However, the game does feature Bowling, Tennis, Chambara (imagine sumo wrestling crossed with sword fighting), Football (or soccer if you’re wrong), Badminton and Volleyball. Each game supports local and online play, meaning you can enjoy playing with friends no matter where you all are.
