The only things with a worse reputation than live-action adaptations of video games are live-action adaptations of cartoons and anime. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dragon Ball, and Cowboy Bebop are only a few examples of shows that got the short end of the stick in live-action. But now there’s the massively successful Netflix’s One Piece that has changed all that. Hopefully, it will bring about the dawn of a new era.

People were understandably skeptical at first, but the show turned out to be great. Now, instead of people expecting its cancellation, they’re crying out for a sequel. Are they getting one? Here’s what you should know about Netflix’s One Piece: Season 2.

When Is Netflix’s One Piece: Season 2 Being Released?

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2023:
The second season has been confirmed by Eiichiro Oda, though its still a long, long way away.

ORIGINAL STORY: Despite One Piece: Season 2 already being worked on, Netflix themselves have not renewed it yet. Because of this, Netflix’s One Piece: Season 2 does not have an official release date yet.

Don’t worry, though. The chances of Netflix approving a second season are extremely high. One Piece skyrocketed to the top of the charts immediately after its debut. It beat the previous debut records set by Stranger Things and Wednesday. Not renewing One Piece: Season 2 would be a huge misstep for them to say the least.

Marty Adelstein, the CEO of Tomorrow Studios, the live-action One Piece producers, had an interview with Variety. In it, he said that the scripts for One Piece: Season 2 were all ready. In the same interview, Becky Clements, president of Tomorrow Studios, says that One Piece: Season 2 could come somewhere between 12-18 months.

Additionally, Adelstein says that they expect to hear from Netflix “within the next week or two weeks”.

Although, even if One Piece: Season 2 gets renewed, they’ll still need to wait for a resolution on the SAG-AFTRA strike. Otherwise, production can’t even start.

Will The Cast Return For Netflix’s One Piece: Season 2?

Until the show gets a formal renewal, there’s no way to absolutely guarantee the entire cast returns for One Piece: Season 2. However, the chances of the cast staying are pretty high. Unless something urgent comes up, there’s really no reason to leave such a seemingly fun and lucrative project.

Here are the main cast members that are expected to return in One Piece: Season 2:

  • Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
  • Emily Rudd as Nami
  • Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro
  • Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp
  • Taz Skylar as Sanji

We will update this when new cast members are announced.

What Could Netflix’s One Piece: Season 2 Be About?

The first season covered the entirety of the East Blue Saga. Everything from the Romance Dawn Arc to the Loguetown Arc is now available in live-action. There were some changes, but nowhere near enough to change the overall story and themes.

Now that the Straw Hat Pirates have all been introduced and assembled, it’s time to start the Arabasta Saga, also known as the Baroque Works Saga. This saga has five arcs starting with the Reverse Mountain Arc plus one filler arc.

The Arabasta Saga is mostly about the Straw Hats’ encounters and battles with a criminal organization known as Baroque Works. Without spoiling too much, that’s the gist of the plot. If you want to find out more, you can read the manga for free, or start watching the anime.
