Neill Blomkamp Confirms District 9 Sequel Still Happening

It’s been eight years since District 9 came to our screens and signed off with the most warranted sequel-bait ever seen in cinema. The universe director Neill Blomkamp created is one that should really be explored further, so it’s almost surprising we’ve heard nary a sniff since.

With his new sci-fi shorts series underway, Blomkamp was recently talking to The Verge to help promote it, who naturally asked about the possibility of a District 9 sequel. The outlook is positive:

“With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world. To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that pre-exists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we’re trying here.”

To say nothing negative of Blomkamp’s later work, District 9 remains the director’s best film to date, so it would just make sense for the cult-hit-turned-sci-fi-juggernaut to get the follow-up it deserves. Speaking of follow-ups, Blomkamp was also asked about his cancelled Alien movie:

“I think it’s totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point. It’s sad. I spent a long time working on that, and I feel like it was really pretty awesome. But politically, the way it’s gone now, and the way that it all is — it’s just not going to live.”

Poor guy. At least we will always have the concept art.
