Ahead of an official reveal that seems to be taking forever and a day to actually happen even though we all know it’s going to happen (tick tock), the first info for the next Mortal Kombat game has already leaked, including the official name and the different editions that will be available.

According to reputable leaker billbil_kun, Mortal Kombat 12 will reportedly be called Mortal Kombat 1, so it looks like we may have a Battlefield 1 situation on our hands. However, considering that we have already had two games called Mortal Kombat (the original and 2011 reboot) and two movies called Mortal Kombat, it’s probably the best name available for a big reboot. It may still cause some confusion for some, but the very first MK game could probably be called be OG MK and the 2011 version will likely continue to also be referred to as MK9.

It would appear, then, that the next MK game will be another reboot of the series, which was set up following the ending of Aftermath, the story DLC for Mortal Kombat 11, which saw Fire God Liu Kang resetting the timelines and worlds following a whole bunch of timey wimey nonsense. Mortal Kombat’s official social media also teased a reboot and the name, showing a clock that skips 12 and goes straight to 1.

The game will, as expected, come to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, but, bizarrely, also come to Switch while skipping PS4 and Xbox One. You have to expect that it’ll be as a cloud version on Switch, especially considering that MK11 on Switch wasn’t always the best performing, though did have its charms, and we’re now a generation ahead. Mortal Kombat 1 will also reportedly retail for $70 on current-gen and PC, while it will be $60 on Switch.

billbil_kun also mentions that the game will be available in Premium ($109.99) and physical Kollector’s ($249.99) editions, though the latter will only be available on PS5 and Xbox. Mortal Kombat 11 had the same editions available at launch, but it’s not yet clear what will be in any of the sequel’s editions. It’s a safe bet that the game will also get an Ultimate-esque re-release after a couple of years that features the vast majority of the post-launch DLC, too. We have some ideas for who want to see on the guest roster.

An official announcement for Mortal Kombat 12 (or Mortal Kombat 1, as it’s now reportedly called) is due anytime soon, believed to be as part of an as yet unannounced State of Play. Get over here for the official reveals as we get them.
