NetherRealm have finally lifted the lid on Mortal Kombat 1, the long-awaited second reboot in the franchise that’s following on from the ending of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. In this new installment, we see a world that’s been created by Fire God Liu Kang, one that features familiar faces with new twists on old stories and rivalries. Of course, stories don’t mean much to those looking to flex their muscles online, and if playing MK1 against other people is what you’re interested in, you’ll want to know how to get in early with the game’s closed beta.

On Mortal Kombat 1’s FAQ page, NetherRealm Studios have confirmed that those who pre-order the game on either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X & S will receive entry into the closed beta, which is due to arrive sometime in August 2023. It’s not clear yet if players will need to pre-order the game through the console’s respective digital storefront, or if physical pre-orders will also work. It doesn’t seem like PC or Switch players will be able to play the beta.

Details about what the closed beta will include haven’t been confirmed yet, but it’s likely that we’ll be able to play online with characters such as Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena and Johnny Cage. The closed beta will also give players the first chance to experience the Kameo Fighter system, a new gameplay mechanic for the MK series that could revolutionise the whole franchise.

While a lot of the game’s roster has already been revealed, we’ve still got quite the wishlist of characters we’d love to see make an appearance.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to launch on September 19th, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X & S and the Nintendo Switch.
