According to The Wrap, Michael Keaton, most famously known for his role as Batman in Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, will be reprising that role in Ezra Miller’s upcoming Flash movie. The Wrap reports that this is all an effort to introduce audiences to the concept of a DC comics multiverse.

In the film, Miller’s Barry Allen decides to travel back in time to prevent the death of his mother. Because of this decision, he creates another universe, one which Keaton’s Batman is in charge of protecting. Conversations are still ongoing, so the actual size of Keaton’s role is currently unknown, but the main point here is to establish that there isn’t a main DC universe, just branches of the same tree. This allows them to keep their options open, and take a different route from the MCU, where all storylines are connected.

This would also mean that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Matt Reeves’ The Batman can be quite distinct from each other, explained away through the existence of multiverse.

The Flash’s path to production hasn’t been the easiest one, with star Ezra Miller writing a script at one point just to keep the project alive. But it looks like things are back on course, with IT director Andy Muschietti helming the project and hopefully bringing something new to the superhero universe.

The Flash is currently scheduled to hit theatres June 3, 2022.
