Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Sneaks Out Today

It’s been a long time coming, but MGS fans finally have a new game to look forward to playing. Half-new. Sort of. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 sneaks its way onto shelves today for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and Switch.

A compilation of three 3D MGS games and 3 original 2D Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is more of a port with tweaks than a wholesale remaster. In fact, the most remastering on it was done back in 2011 by Bluepoint, with their HD Collection work being ported as part of the Master Collection without too many changes to bring it in line with modern systems.

Here’s a quick synopsis for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1:

The origin of stealth action returns. METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 unifies the beginning of the METAL GEAR gameplay experience in one single package. Infiltrate enemy fortresses all over the globe, complete your missions with stealth and experience the thrilling cinematic story of the METAL GEAR series.

Volume 1 line-up features the original titles and beginning of the METAL GEAR series, including the original versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (which also includes VR Missions/Special Missions), and the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is the first “new” release for Metal Gear since the widely-hated Metal Gear Survive in 2018, which had no involvement from Kojima following his messy departure from Konami.

While it’s a shame it isn’t a more meaningful compilation, it must be said that the games themselves hold up remarkably well. I played all three 3D entries for my review, spending my birthday skulking through Big Shell and having just a great time. If you just wanna play some of the best games of all time, they’re all certainly functional and hold up pretty beautifully from a gameplay perspective, but despite all the extras, it’s still quite the pricey time for the effort put in.
