It’s a wonderful era for Netflix subscribers, cable customers and traditional television viewers alike, with more shows available to watch than the average person could possibly ever find the time for, but 10 shows in particular have struck a chord with Cultured Vultures for this year.
10. Homeland
Season 4 of Homeland has seen a great reception, with viewers praising its ability to make a comeback over the less popular previous season, featuring the departure of beloved character Brody which many found to be ‘anticlimactic’. As a political thriller, it was always bound to attract a more niche audience than some of the bigger shows but this year it has touched on some of the biggest and most relevant issues, such as America’s war on terrorism and appears to be slowly but surely clawing it’s way back up the rankings.
9. Peaky Blinders
This may not be one of the most well-known and spoke about series… Yet. But could the series be set for a rise to fame in 2015? Some of our team here at Cultured Vultures certainly think so. Having started to reel in some bigger names for the cast, this 1919 drama set in Birmingham, England, just became that extra bit more captivating. Despite the brilliant acting and the great deal of care taken in the aesthetics of every camera shot, this show is not without flaws. However, it could be argued that these add to the shows own unique edge.
8. Sherlock
You have to admire the ability of a show that only puts out 3 episodes at the beginning of the year to have such an impact that it continues to be discussed throughout the rest of the year. Season 3 of this adaptation of the original Sherlock Holmes detective books has become the UKs most watched drama series in the last decade. With the next series yet to start filming, we’re still haunted by the creepy message of the presumed dead Moriarty. Did you miss me?
7. Doctor Who
Whilst the new doctor played by Peter Capaldi along with the writing of the show has faced some harsh criticism this year, it makes the list for continuing to be one of the most
talked about television shows throughout the year. Perhaps some didn’t fully understand the context of this darker, more serious incarnation of the doctor or just weren’t captivated enough by the story lines, including the much anticipated release of the female version of the Master. Danny’s character certainly seemed to lack… character. But the show managed to maintain the interest of the majority of viewers nevertheless.
6. Psych
March 2014 saw the end to US comedy/detective drama Psych. Although the show never quite gained the UK fan base it deserved, it has been sorely missed by fans. The last season ended almost exactly how it should have, the realistic ending that was expected all along but with many happy twists along the way. The best thing about this show was the quirkiness of lead character, fake psychic Shawn Spencer and the ups and downs in his friendship with business partner Gus. With many hilarious one-liners, this is a show still worth watching now if you missed the party.
