The sequel to 2014’s Lords of the Fallen, the aptly titled Lords of the Fallen 2, is going through quite the rocky period, as the partnership between CI Games and Defiant Studios has ended, and rather unceremoniously too it seems. The break was announced on Wednesday by CI Games through a Polish press release, which was translated for Eurogamer:

“The termination of the agreement was submitted due to inadequate execution by Defiant [of] a key work stage (milestone no. 11), a so-called vertical slice. The quality of the work was lower than expected by the company, as precisely described in the agreement, despite three calls to improve the quality of this stage of work.”

CI Games will now handle development of Lords of the Fallen 2 in-house, but Defiant Studios are rebutting the narrative presented by CI Games. Speaking directly to Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese, Defiant’s founder David Grijns had this to say:

“We categorically disagree with the portrayal of Defiant Studios made by CI Games. The team that was working on CI Games’ project was comprised of exceedingly talented developers whose work we fully stand behind. Our team knows how to build quality games as is evident by their key roles in Just Cause 3, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Far Cry 5, Devil May Cry (DmC) and many other top tier projects. As we intend to abide by our contractual confidentiality obligations, at this time we cannot expand further on this matter.”

Defiant were announced as the game’s developers back in the summer of 2018, after the game was stuck in a bit of development hell following the departure of CI Games’ previous lead Tomasz Gop. The original game was co-developed with German studio Deck 13, who’ve gone on to brilliant success with The Surge, and the upcoming sequel.

CI, meanwhile, are currently developing the new Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts, which is scheduled to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC later this year. Making sure that a new Ghost Warrior game doesn’t launch in the same sorry state as the third game did will likely be the biggest priority for CI Games, so we probably won’t see the Lords of the Fallen sequel for a long time. At the very least, we might see the release of Code Vein in the meantime.
