Like A Dragon: Ishin is a game of roughly one million side activities, whether that’s chicken racing, singing your heart out, or trying to figure out exactly how majong works. One of those activities is fishing, which should be available to you from Chapter 2, but how exactly does it work? Well, you’re not going to be a master angler from the word go in Ishin.
The first place players will be able to fish in Ishin is just outside of Teradaya, the inn that you first wake up in during Chapter 2. Go outside, then approach the water and choose either sea or river fishing, with different fish being found in either and different rods (or tackles) being required. However, you will be given a starter rod that will do the job for now after a bit of progress.
Before you start fishing here, though, it’s recommended that you find some Quality Bait and upgrade your tackle to stop you from having to sit and wait around. Bait can be purchased from vendors later on in the chapter (there’s a roving vendor around Rakunai in the north), and is well worth the mon as it cuts your waiting time right down and also makes the quality of the fish higher. Better tackles, meanwhile, can be earned by exchanging Virtue at shrines for both sea and river variants.
With a better tackle and some bait in hand, it’s time to fish.
Approach the waterbed that you want to fish, then select your bait and scatter it. Then, make sure you change your tackle to the upgraded one. Press X/A to cast your rod and watch on as the fish start coming towards you. You can also cast your rod directly in front of the shadows of fish to have a better chance of catching them, but you will only be able to do this at night.
Once a fish turns red and starts coming towards your tackle, be patient. They will start nibbling at your tackle, but just wait until it starts to sink underwater. Once the red line on your cast goes fully underwater and the controller vibrates, press X/A to reel in your catch.
Fish are used for various things in Ishin, though it’s not entirely clear what to begin with. They can be given to a cat later on, prepared as seafood, handed to a bad angler to impress his wife, and even help you to run a successful farm once the game starts to really open up.
