Sunny Season 16
Sunny Season 16

It’s good to see that in-between restoring footballing dynasties, directing and starring in their own movies, and just generally being Danny DeVito that the IASIP gang will almost certainly just keep returning until they aren’t welcome anymore. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 16 will mark the gang returning for another toe knife stab at it, with them no doubt getting up to nefarious and more importantly hilarious misdeeds.

While Sunny isn’t at the peak of its powers these days (and, really, what show could be after close to twenty years of nonsense?), the Paddy’s gang are still funnier than most of their peers, random trips to Ireland notwithstanding. Season 16 doesn’t seem to have anything serialised like Season 15 did, but you can rest assured that there will be satirical spins on modern day America and one or two rounds of Night Crawlers after a couple of years without new episodes.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 16 Synopsis

Here’s a synopsis for Season 16 of Sunny:

The Gang is ripping straight from the headlines – Inflation, US-Russian relations, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control, and… celebrity-branded products. But here’s a headline for you: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Returns for Season Sweet 16!”

But there’s nothing sweet about them as Ronald “Mac” MacDonald (Rob McElhenney), Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day), Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton), Dee Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito) yearn for the past as they attempt to survive in 2023.

This year alone, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women’s athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health. At the end of the day, they’re navigating 2023 with 16 years of baggage as a few figures from their past rear their heads.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will both guest star at some point in the season, with Mary Elizabeth Ellis (The Waitress), Artemis Pebdani (Artemis), and Jimmi Simpson and Nate Mooney (the McPoyles) all set to return.
