How To Stay Safe And Still Play Pokémon Go

Self-isolation can't stop you from being the very best, like no one ever was.

Pokémon Go

With everything that is going on in the wider world at the moment, chances are you’ll be spending more time inside. This could mean less things to do on Pokémon Go, but Niantic have recently added and changed a few in-game features that mean you can still enjoy the game from the comfort of your own home. Here’s how you can still enjoy Pokémon Go while staying safe.

Incense

Pokémon Go

Incense is an in-game item that causes Pokémon to spawn around you for 30 minutes, wherever you are. If you go to the shop in Pokémon Go, you will see an Incense box for sale that costs only 1 Pokécoin. This contains 30 Incenses, each of which will last an hour instead of the usual 30 minutes, and will spawn Pokémon a lot more frequently. You should be getting nearly 1 Pokémon every minute of your Incense no matter where you are when you drop it, which means a minimum of 60 catches right there for you.

Meltan Boxes

Pokémon Go

In a similar theme to the Incense, a Meltan box is an item you can get when trading a Pokémon from your game into Pokémon Let’s Go: Pikachu or Eevee, and will spawn Meltan, a mythical Pokémon unobtainable any other way, for 30 minutes. During this time, these boxes will also last an hour and will spawn at a similar rate to the Incense, so you should be looking at a possible Meltan a minute as well. Use those Pinap berries that give you double the Pokémon candy, and you’ll be able to get the 400 needed to evolve it to a Melmetal in no time.

Battling Friends

Pokémon Go

Normally if you want to battle someone on your friends list, you have to wait until you hit Ultra Friends. This would have required 30 days of interaction, whether that be opening a gift, raiding together or trading. For now, in order to battle, you only need to be Good Friends, which simply requires adding the other person in your game. Take this opportunity to battle your friends that you can’t meet up with in person, and still be able to interact with them in-game, as well as build the perfect team.

GO Battle League Changes

Pokémon Go

The GO Battle League has only recently been introduced in the game, and meant that every time you walked 3km, you had the chance to do 5 battles against another real life trainer. For every win, you were given a reward, consisting of stardust, items and even rare Pokémon. Every 5 battles you finished changed your rank, going up or down depending on your amount of wins.

Currently, the 3km walking requirement to do the next set of battles has been abolished, so you can complete the 5 battles up to 7 times a day. As well as this, the rare Pokémon you could encounter can also be the T5 raid boss live at the time, which offers you an opportunity to get this Pokémon without actually going outside and raiding. For the couple of weeks ahead, these Legendary Pokémon will include Cobalion and Lugia, both with the chance of being shiny.

Remember, if you do want to go out and play Pokémon Go, stay safe. Keep your distance from other players and try not to gather in big groups. Look after yourselves out there, Trainers.
