For fans of the original game (and also Ash, who might want to give it another chance) that turned out to be something of a surprise smash hit, it’s time to find out if lightning can strike twice with Hot Wheels Unleashed. Milestone’s arcade racer releases today across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, and Switch.

Here’s a quick synopsis for Hot Wheels Unleashed 2:

“The world’s raddest cars are back and taking the fun to the next level! Race over 130 vehicles with crazy new mechanics and even more vehicle types. Plus, build your tracks with stunning new environments and different game modes to have fun off and online.”

It seems like Milestone has gone “do that again, but more” when it comes to this sequel. It’s not a grand reinvention of the wheel(s), but the already pretty sumptuous visuals have been given a nice facelift, there’s more terrain and tracks to race across, and there’s even more ways to tailor your experience to how you see fit. The previous game’s custom tracks offered some of the most fun you will find across any arcade racer, and there looks like being even more options to choose from this time out. The new and improved Livery Editor also gives you the opportunity to place stickers on your car to make it the hottest wheel around or something.

There’s even a campaign that sees you trying to save a city by, of course, dazzling them with your racing skills. There is also both local and online multiplayer, with four players going head-to-head in split-screen multiplayer or a heart-pounding race with up to 12 players online. There’s a lot going on in this one, so will you be picking it up? Be sure to read up on which edition is best for you.
