Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition Is The First 2-Disc PS5 Game

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition is set to launch on October 6th 2023, and will also be the first PS5 game ever to be spread across 2 discs. The reason is quite simple: the game is too large to fit onto a single disc.

Does it play?, a community that tests physical game releases for offline playability, have discovered the back cover for the Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition that reveals the 2-disc icon.

When you factor in the vast scope of the base game, paired with the Burning Shores DLC, it’s no surprise that Horizon Forbidden West’s wealth of content won’t fit onto a single disc.

A PS5 Blu-ray disc can hold up to a maximum of 100gb; anything exceeding that would need to be added as a downloadable code, or in this case, a second disc.

Originally, Horizon Forbidden West was too big to fit onto a single PS4 disc, so that version also came with 2. This didn’t translate to PS5 physical copies since the base game was still under the 100gb limit at launch. The PS4 game disc can only hold a maximum of 50gb, which is half the storage space of the PS5 game disc.

One disc will likely be used for copying files over to the console, not like the old glory days when games would pause when one disc was played through and then you were asked to insert disc 2. Fortunately, transferring files from a disc tends to be faster than downloading, so this should help speed things along for those looking to dive straight in.

Releasing next year, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is also coming with 2 discs for the physical copy and looks to be in second place for this new wave of 2-disc games. This feels like a callback to the original Final Fantasy VII, which was ironic for having multiple discs on the PS1.

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition will also launch on PC in early 2024.
