Godzilla 2’s New Director Already Has Experience With Monsters

Godzilla: King of Monsters seems like it’s been up in the air for a while with no news indicating that it’s pushing forward.

Well, now we know who will be taking to the director’s chair. Michael Dougherty is leading the production and will also serve as the film’s screenwriter along with Zach Shields, which was already announced. According to reports, he has been in the frame for a long time but was just waiting on studio approval before he could make the official jump up.

Dougherty already has prior experience in working with monsters on the big screen. He directed the underrated Krampus ably and also oversaw the superb horror movie Trick R’ Treat and is quickly looking like a shrewd replacement for Gareth Edwards.

Gozilla 2014

After helming 2014’s polarising Godzilla, Edwards stepped away from future projects so he could focus on smaller scale productions after Rogue One hit cinemas.

Slated for release in 2019, King of Monsters will form part of the new big monster universe (because every cinematic property needs to have its own universe, apparently) along with King Kong, which we already discussed over here in some detail. Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled for 2020, which is either extremely naive or smart from Lionsgate to put so many plans in motion already.
