Ghost of Tsushima’s review embargo has dropped, and critics have had a lot of mixed things to say about Sucker Punch’s samurai epic. Opinions have ranged from middling to masterclass, with some enamored with the game’s open world environment while others felt it to be a bit soulless.

While it’s been receiving a range of reviews in the West, Japanese media have been showering practically universal love on Ghost of Tsushima, with the most notable praise coming from Famitsu, who gave the game a perfect score of 40/40. To date, Tsushima is only the third Western game to receive a perfect score from the magazine, joining The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto V.

In particular, one of Famitsu’s subheadings for the review is “There Is No Sense Of Discomfort In This Foreign-Made Japanese World”, which references how some Western games dealing with Japanese culture tend to amalgamate aspects from Korean and Chinese culture as well. While the reviewer notes that they’re not sure how historically accurate Tsushima’s depiction of Kamakura Era Japan is, they feel it succeeds in being a fictional account of that period.
