George A. Romero Immortalised At Dawn of the Dead Mall

George A. Romero was the godfather of zombie movies, there’s no disputing that. His original trilogy is perhaps his most adored work with Dawn of the Dead, the second entry, ranking as the best for many, so much so that its remake was good just by association.

To commemorate his passing in 2017 after a battle with lung cancer, his importance as a filmmaker has been recognised with a bust in his image at the Monroeville Mall: the iconic location for the majority of Dawn of the Dead. The monument was unveiled to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie.

Here’s the video of its unveiling.

The bust is housed in the original Clock Tower court and was crafted by Christian Stavrakis, who was able to raise funds for the project through Indiegogo with it seeming like every cent was put to good use. It’s a great deal better than the bust Cristiano Ronaldo had, that’s for sure.

Romero was born in 1940 and found his start by shooting commercials before going on to direct and produce Night of the Living Dead: one of the most revered and influential horror movies of all-time. After a decades long absence from zombie movies after Day of the Dead, Romero returned with Land of the Dead before following those up with Diary of the Dead in 2007 and Survival of the Dead in 2009.

July 17th will mark one year since Romero’s passing. It will be many more years before we find another auteur quite like him.
