Game of Thrones Creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss Exit Stars Wars Trilogy

Considering the final season of Game of Thrones, should we celebrate?

The Last Jedi

According to Deadline, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss have stepped away from their deal with Disney, which was to launch a Star Wars trilogy starting from 2022. The plan was to chart a new post-Skywalker era, charting new ground with the cinematic landscape George Lucas created. The reason behind the exit is due to the pair’s commitment to Netflix, having signed a nine-figure deal with them. The duo were also courted by HBO/WarnerMedia, Disney, Comcast, Amazon and Apple, but Netflix ultimately won out.

This deal has thus left the pair with a very tight schedule, which unfortunately has left them with no room to properly develop a Star Wars trilogy, especially if they want to do it properly. Their decision to step away has nothing to do with their love for the franchise or any creative differences, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has certainly not closed any doors on future collaborations, with an open invitation should the pair decide to return.

In the meantime, there are still plenty of Star Wars projects in play. The Rise of Skywalker will be released in December, and there’s the Obi-Wan series that is being planned for Disney+, with Ewan McGregor resuming his role as the iconic character. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is also in talks to develop a Stars Wars movie, so the Star Wars new era conversation is far from dead in the water. It will be interesting to see who will replace Benioff and Weiss, and hopefully, the world will go into safe hands.
