Ukrainian developers Frogwares have announced that they’re planning to remake one of their classic Sherlock Holmes experiences for modern consoles, as the pressures of the ongoing war in their country forced them to abandon their last project. However, they’ve now announced they’ll be releasing a remade and rewritten version of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S and Nintendo Switch.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened sees the legendary investigator and his partner, Watson, investigate a straightforward missing persons case. However, this proves to be anything but, as the pair find themselves embroiled in the machinations of a shadowy cult who worship the eldritch god Cthulhu. You’ll then travel across the world, trying to put a stop to their plans before they can doom the world.

As a remake, Frogwares have stated that much of the plot elements regarding the mystery itself will remain intact, but the gameplay will be overhauled to bring it up to speed with modern game releases. The story rewrites refer more to the relationship between Holmes and Watson themselves. In the original 2006 release, Holmes and Watson had been partners for a long time, but the remake will cast their pair as acquaintances, keeping The Awakened in line with Frogwares’ last release, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One.

As for why Frogwares are remaking this game, a statement from producer Denys Chebotarov talks about how the war in Ukraine has forced their hand in some respects: “We’ve always wanted to remake this game at some point, but the war has forced us into making it now. By working on a title that has the bulk of its content, scope and narrative all locked in place after just a few weeks, we are giving ourselves a much more predictable and structured development cycle. And stability and predictability is exactly what we need right now while the rest of our days remain so uncertain.”

Because of the war though, Frogwares are launching a Kickstarter to assist with the final production funds need for the game’s development. The Kickstarter will also provide fans with bonuses and rewards for those looking to support a studio whose country is at war. The Kickstarter for Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened isn’t live yet, but promises to go live soon, with a trailer and more details set to be unveiled then.
