February’s PlayStation Plus Free Games Are Not To Be Missed

Not A Hero

The general consensus seems to be that PlayStation Plus – Sony’s online subscription service – isn’t worth the money you pay for it. I don’t necessarily feel this way, but it’s pretty inarguable that some recent months haven’t given the content that we’ve come to expect; especially considering brilliant titles like Rocket League and Outlast were once available on the service.

Well, I’d just like to make a point of recommending that you check out the free PS4 games offered this month; they’re definitely worthy of a download.

Little Big Planet 3

First of all, there’s the hugely charming LittleBigPlanet 3: the (naturally) third entry in the platformer series that Media Molecule started back on the PS3. It’s brimming with the same sheen as the previous entries, and even has Hugh Laurie make an appearance as one of the game’s many colourful inhabitants. If you are a fan of couch co-op, then it’s pretty ridiculous not to at least sample what the world of Sackboy has to offer.

Next up, there’s the surprisingly addictive Not a Hero. I was drawn to this title on account of it being published by Devolver Digital – the same company responsible for the brilliant Hotline Miami games – and I was immediately hooked by the rapid combat and distinctly retro visuals. The game also features some genuinely funny dialogue delivered by a purple mayoral rabbit, so there’s that. If you like fast-paced score chasing gameplay, then this is a title you’ll want to look into. While I’m not sure I’d replay it quite as obsessively as Hotline Miami, I can certainly see myself returning until completion.

Starwhal

And last but certainly not least, we’ve got the apologetically synth-fuelled Starwhal. If you’re in search for a unique multiplayer arcade time-dump, then you’re in luck; Starwhal offers up to 4-player PvP action, where each person takes control of a colourful, customisable narwhal as you desperately try to impale each other on your pointed horn. If you haven’t got any friends, then it’s surprisingly fun to try solo; the PvP combat is replaced by a few modes, such as one which will see you trying to navigate mazes as you battle both the intentionally challenging controls, as well as a handful of obstacles in your path.

These aren’t the only titles available for PS4 this month – there’s a whopping five in total – but they’re just the ones I found myself enjoying more than a few AAA releases as of late. If you’ve felt letdown by PlayStation’s free offerings lately, then I’d recommend checking these games out and seeing if anything takes your fancy.
