Did Fantastic Four’s Director Just Criticise His Own Film?

We try not to judge movies until we see them at Cultured Vultures, but the new Fantastic Four film might just be the most badly managed film of its generation.

Hot on the heels of several interviews with the film’s cast that range from awkward to embarrassing, reports are coming in that the actual director of the thing is now attacking his own movie.

Josh Trank, who has been making rumour filled headlines all year regarding his behaviour and competence, has tweeted a revealing snipe at the new blockbuster. In a tweet that now seems to have been deleted, Trank said “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”

The upshot is that Trank thinks he had a better version of the film a full year ago. Given all the rumours around the film it’s probably best we take this with a pinch of salt. After all some of those rumours are centred around Trank’s own incompetence – including reportedly trashing a house paid for by the film’s production company.

While this is all rumour of course, Trank was also booted out of the director’s chair for a planned Star Wars spin-off movie earlier this year. Is there truth to any of the accusations? Or is it all just smoke?

What Trank’s tweet implies is that the version hitting movie theatres this week has movie executive hands all over it. Fox certainly wouldn’t be the first film studio to tamper with a superhero flick to the detriment of quality. It wouldn’t even be the first time it’s happened this year (I’m looking at you Age of Ultron).

The early months of 2015 definitely saw re-shoots for the film, which could imply Fox were meddling with Trank’s cut. Which they obviously have a right to do. It’s not exactly uncommon for a big action movie to bring actors back in for extra shooting.

But if early reviews are anything to go by, someone has got something wrong somewhere. As to exactly who and what and why, we might not know for a long time. Or ever.
