Disney just released the official trailer for Cruella, with Emma Stone in the titular role. Glenn Close previously took on the role in the 1996 film 101 Dalmatians.
What’s It About?
Cruella is an all-new live-action feature film about the early days of the legendary Cruella de Vil. The film is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution. We follow Estella, who is determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves and together, they build a life for themselves on the London streets.
Then one day, everything changes when Estella’s talent for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend played by Dame Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the notorious Cruella we meet later on, someone who has no compunctions skinning Dalmatians.
Considering the success of Joker, where we explore the origin story of a well-known villain, Cruella is primed to follow in its footsteps. This is not the first time Disney has pulled back the veil on one of its villains. The live action films devoted to Maleficent were also the origin story of a well-known villain, though it must be said that Disney’s Cruella definitely looks edgier than expected.
Cruella will be released May 28, 2021.
