Ashes in Elden Ring are spirit summons that allow you to bring spirit allies to certain battles. You can also upgrade Ashes by using spirit tuning, which is unlocked after completing quite a long quest.

To unlock spirit tuning in Elden Ring, you must first meet Roderika (aka the Woman with a Red Hood) in Stormhill Shack. She will first off request that you find the Chrysalids’ Memento. Keep talking to her and she will give you the Sitting Sideways pose and Spirit Jellyfish Ashes as well.

You can find Chrysalids’ Memento in the Rampart Tower in Stormveil Castle. You will need to defeat Margit before you can reach this item. The Chrysalids’ Memento is located near the Grafted Scion (the guy with a million arms) atop a pile of bodies. You can just run past the mini-boss and swoop up the item if you don’t want to face them.

Take Chrysalids’ Memento to Roderika and she will say that she’s leaving the area. She can next be found at Roundtable Hold; talk to her there to be given a Golden Seed, used for charging flasks. Keep talking to her and she will mention wanting to become a spirit tuning apprentice. Speak to Smithing Master Hewg (the guy always hammering away) about Roderika to see if she will take him on as an apprentice.

The next time you will return to Roundtable Hold, Roderika will offer her spirit tuning services to upgrade your Ashes. Players can use Glovewort and runes to upgrade their ashes.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X & S, and Xbox One.
