E3 2015: Shenmue III is Actually, Actually Happening

This huge reveal at Sony’s E3 2015 conference goes to show that if you bitch and whine long enough, you will eventually get what you want.

When the creator of the Shenmue series Yu Suzuki took to the stage of the conference, even the most cynical of gamers would have doubted that the third installment in would actually be announced. Maybe a HD remaster if we were lucky. But no, it’s actually happening and it’s being funded by donations on Kickstarter – $400,000 had been raised within a matter of minutes and the website actually crashed. At the time of writing, the total raised stood at a respectable $2,005,143, already exceeding its target of $2million with 31 days still left to go.

According to Suzuki:

Since the release of Shenmue 2, now 14 years ago, I have been greeted by the passionate outpouring of dedicated fans and Shenmue community members wherever I go. They all want to know one thing: “When will Shenmue 3 be coming out?” With the advent of games using Kickstarter during these past few years, the new and now frequent demand from the fans has been, “Do a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3!”

If Shenmue 3 was going to get made, I wanted to make it with the fans. Through Kickstarter, I knew that could happen. Together, with Shenmue fans everywhere, I knew we could build the game that the series deserves.

Let’s hope we don’t have a Chinese Democracy on our hands and that Shenmue III is the send-off that the cult series deserves. Or at least gives the guy below justification in crying like a small child.
