Dreams Creation of the Week: Expiration Date by Zerosweven

Expiration Date is certainly one of the most ambitious games we've seen in Dreams to date.

Expiration Date Dreams 1

Each week, we’re diving into Media Molecule’s Dreams and picking our favourite thing we come across, whether that’s a little cube demanding a hug, a song that’s a total bop, or an FPS that’s better than most new things on Steam.

Though short, Expiration Date continually made me exclaim with indignation — in a good way, mind you. I simply could not believe what I was playing: a WIP top-down RPG with a tonne of ambition that it is looking like delivering on.

I almost threw my controller out of the window in excited disbelief when I discovered the character customisation; how can anyone be making something this fleshed out and deep already?

Here are a few screens from Expiration Date, which is the work of Zerosweven.

Expiration Date starts off with your finding yourself in a strange place with amnesia, which then introduces the character customisation with surprising depth. You’re able to select whether you want to be silly or “straight”, and it even includes the ability to pick your own skin tone.

From there, a shopkeeper asks you to track down an axe. After a bit of platforming, you enter a room with a fairly straightforward switch puzzle, find the axe that you were asked to get, and then fight off a zombie with said axe, which even has its own stats.

Once you get back to the shopkeeper, you are then able to pick from an assortment, which, again, have their own stats. Once your business is complete, you leave the shop before encountering more zombies and then legging it through the nearest exist, at which point Expiration Date ends with more promised to come in the future.

So, to clarify, Expiration Date has: a levelling system; combat, multiple weapons, character customisation, currency, NPCs, and puzzles.

And here’s me thinking my noughts and crosses creation could be good.
