Drawn To Death Dies Today, Servers Shutting Down

Drawing to a close.

If you remember Drawn To Death, the ill-fated PS4 exclusive from David Jaffe that never exactly took off, you have very little time left to give it one last try. The servers shut down today (March 25th, 2019), less than two years since the game launched.

As Drawn to Death is online only, it will be rendered totally unplayable once the servers go down, as alluded to by this announcement when you start the game up.

Drawn to Death

Developed by The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, themselves now defunct, Drawn to Death was a multiplayer shooter in a similar-ish vein to the arena shooters of old with an eye-catching art style that looked like the scribblings of a bored teenager. While it was certainly distinctive, it never really captured much of an audience after poor reviews and word of mouth; it being given away on PlayStation Plus did not seem to help much, either.

I booted it up just to see if it was still alive (no exact time had been announced for the shut-down) and was pleasantly surprised that it was. It’s certainly an interesting game, which I remembered from my brief sojourn with it at launch — I actually did kind of like the unique art style that others don’t care for, though it certainly hurts the eyes when it gets chaotic. There’s plenty of character here, but it’s also trying way too hard to be edgy with constant bad language and ridiculous amounts of blood, which was funny for about two minutes and then became very wearying.

I queued up for a four-player Brawl, but only ended up finding one other player, who I just have to assume was curious about the game’s imminent death like I was. The match itself was mechanically fine — even if aiming felt like trying to force a seal through a straw at times — but ultimately nothing spectacular. After taking an early 2-0 lead, my opponent somehow managed to get me into a presumably unavoidable melee loop every match thereafter and took the 3-2 win.

Once the servers do eventually go offline, it will join other online games published by SIE, like Kill Strain (remember that?), that just couldn’t quite cut it. Drawn to Death was a fine game, but that was all it ever was — just fine. Once you look past the scribbles and the “edge”, you’re left with a competent shooter with not much else worth talking about.

We will be updating this post once Drawn To Death goes offline for good.

UPDATE: That’s all she wrote.
