It always comes back to Spud.

Reports have confirmed that Drake Maverick has returned to WWE for the second time after being released late last year. Drake will now be performing backstage duties as part of the RAW creative team, a role which he has apparently had for at least 3-4 weeks. Maverick is apparently well-liked across all three brands of WWE programming, making him an ideal candidate to serve as the bridge between the talent and creative.

Maverick was released as part of WWE’s budget cuts back in November 2021, shortly after this was revealed, Drake posted a well-made, spooky vignette suggesting that he was done with WWE’s treatment of him and is moving on to bigger things in wrestling. All seemed set for Rockstar Spud to make his return, whether that be as part of his pal EC3’s fledging promotion, Control Your Narrative, or striking out on his own on either the US or UK indie scene.

Drake was previously best known for his work as 205 Live General Manager, an on-screen persona that helped him become established as a character with both charm and personality. Maverick later became manager for the Authors of Pain tag-team, then took to the ring himself to compete for the 24/7 Championship, a death sentence of sorts. After his first release, Maverick then returned to NXT to attempt to salvage his in-ring career, though this did enter him into the new Cruiserweight Championship division to some success, he was eventually relegated into a flop-team with Killian Dain, leading to his release once again.

It’s good to see WWE taking back some of the talent they’d originally let go of in 2021 and this could very well be the best role for Drake Maverick at this point in his career. Let’s hope he brings some fresh ideas to the creative table.
