DOOM Eternal’s First Big Update Makes Swimming Less Awful

Also, Empowered Demons and Battlemode changes, but we know the real priority fix here.

Bethesda have announced that the first big update for DOOM Eternal is now live on all platforms, bringing with it a host of new features, fixes and balance changes, the most important of them being that the swimming should now be less bothersome. Note: less bothersome. It’s still probably going to feel like controlling an M1 Abrams in a vat of custard, but now it should be slightly better.

DOOM Eternal’s Update 1 brings with it Empowered Demons. If you die in the campaign mode, the demon that killed you will be transported to another player’s campaign, beefed up and ready to murder. Killing them will be a challenge, but doing so will reward plenty of health and ammo, along with some event XP so you unlock more cosmetic items. Crucially, Empowered Demons can be turned off in the options menu if you don’t feel like getting battered by a powered up Marauder.

The update also adds Echelon Levelling, which allows you to level up past level 250. Once you complete level 250, you’ll receive your first Echelon Rank and your level will reset to 1. Don’t worry, you’ll keep all your unlocks and you’ll gain a special rank insignia. The update post shows the potential for up to 48 Echelon Ranks, so you could be playing for a long time.

Other updates and changes coming through this update include in the introduction of Denuvo Anti-Cheat for anyone wanting to play Battlemode on PC, along with the introduction of a mandatory tutorial for first time Battlemode players. Bethesda can also now take disciplinary action on players who routinely leave matches early or are abusive on voice chat.

That said, the biggest update is clearly to the swimming, as players will now take less damage while swimming, there’s a vertical dash ability when in water, and they’ve removed all difficulty damage scaling regarding both slime and water. Personally, they should have removed swimming altogether, but I’ll take any improvements Bethesda dish out regarding the worst aspect of the campaign. The full patch notes are live right now on the Slayer’s Club website, so let us know what your favourite change is in the comments.
