Donald Glover Nets Overall Deal With Amazon Prime

While he hasn't completely cut ties with his previous home at FX, this is a major change of direction.

Donald Glover, who still seems like one of the younger cast members from Community despite his lengthy and multi-award-winning careers in both TV and music, has inked an overall deal with streaming service Amazon Prime, said to clock in at eight figures.

What’s he doing for them?

Amazon has so far refused to comment, but the Hollywood Reporter reports one of the projects being created as part of the deal is a show revolving around a Beyoncé-like figure tentatively titled Hive, led by writer Janine Nabers (known for Watchmen and Away), and that Malia Obama is also attached as a writer.

The news comes hot on the heels of Glover’s recent announcement that he and Fleabag creator-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be creating and starring in an adaptation of the 2005 action-comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which is also set to go out on Amazon Prime. This is scheduled to arrive in 2022, and is co-created by Atlanta writer/producer Francesca Sloane, who, like Waller-Bridge, also has an overall deal with Amazon Prime.

And what about his other work?

Glover’s move to Amazon will not usurp his work on FX’s comedy-drama Atlanta, perhaps the project he’s best known for and one which has attracted popular and critical acclaim. Atlanta has already been renewed for a third and fourth season, which are both set to begin production in March, being filmed back-to-back in a bid to have the show return to the screen as soon as possible.

His brother, Stephen Glover, who also wrote and produced on Atlanta, has also inked an overall deal with Amazon Prime.

Notably, it’s been reported that as part of the deal, Donald Glover’s previous work would be featured on a content portal on Amazon Prime – although which work, exactly, is an open question. Atlanta is still of course an FX production, and Community, which has been streaming on Hulu for some time, was also made available on Netflix with quite a splash of publicity last year.
