Devil May Cry 5 Editions Explained: Standard, Special and Devil Hunter Compared

Everyone’s favourite Michael Jackson tribute game has been getting a bit more complex lately with multiple re-releases across generations. Devil May Cry 5’s editions through the years share the same main campaign, but differ in playable characters, extra modes and technical features.

Special Edition is the most complete version for PS5 and Xbox Series X & S. On other platforms, the main thing to check is whether Vergil is included.

What Do Standard and Deluxe Include?

The original PS4, Xbox One and PC game contains the campaign starring Nero, Dante and V, plus the free Bloody Palace challenge mode. Pretty easy stuff.

Playable Vergil is a separate paid addition to the original base game, although packages labelled + Vergil include him.

Deluxe adds weapons, music, alternative announcers and live-action cutscenes. It doesn’t add a new campaign or Special Edition’s exclusive modes. The original Deluxe release also didn’t include Vergil, so check the precise bundle name.

What Does Special Edition Add?

Available on PS5 and Xbox Series X & S, Special Edition includes Vergil, Deluxe content and two extra modes:

  • Turbo Mode: increases gameplay speed by 20%.
  • Legendary Dark Knight: fills encounters with much larger enemy groups.

It also offers faster loading and additional graphics and performance options, including up to 120fps on compatible displays.

Special Edition is a separate purchase, rather than an upgrade for the PS4 or Xbox One game, but this is the only version of the game you can buy physically on PS5 and Xbox. Buying Vergil DLC doesn’t unlock its extra modes. There is no official PC Special Edition.

What Is Devil Hunter Edition?

Devil Hunter Edition is the Nintendo Switch 2 release, launched on 23 June 2026, with advertised 60fps play in TV and handheld modes.

It includes Vergil and the previously released DLC extras, but omits Turbo and Legendary Dark Knight for some reason. Choose it for portable play rather than Special Edition’s full feature set.

Which Edition Should You Buy?

It’s luckily fairly straightforward:

  • PS5 or Xbox Series X & S: Special Edition.
  • Switch 2: Devil Hunter Edition.
  • PC: a + Vergil bundle; Deluxe extras are optional.
  • Already own the original: add Vergil unless Special Edition’s additional modes justify buying another copy.

No matter which one you choose, you’ll still be playing one of the most absurd and brilliant character action games of all time.
