UPDATE (01/07/2020): Crash 4’s developers Toys For Bob have issued a statement on Twitter to deny that there will be microtransactions in the upcoming game, and that the Totally Tubular Skin Pack will be available with all digital versions of the game.

While it’s good to hear that the game won’t contain microtransactions, it still doesn’t address the fact that the Microsoft Store listing states that the game will “offer in-app purchases”. It’s possible that these purchases are for actual DLC content, such as new levels, but that remains to be seen. It’s also worth pointing out, like many have done in reply to the developer’s tweet, that Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled added microtransactions to the game a few weeks after launch.

ORIGINAL POST: According to the Microsoft Store listing for the game, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will contain in-game purchases of some kind. It’s not currently clear what those purchases will be, but pre-ordering the game will unlock the Totally Tubular Skin Pack which will also be “available at launch”.

With the existence of a Skin Pack already confirmed, it’s not outside the realm of imagination that believe that there will be more skin packs available down the road. The description for the game also mentions the presence of “online leaderboards” and the ability to register Activision accounts, so it’s possible that customising Crash and Coco will tie into your online identity.

The presence of skin packs in a game like Crash Bandicoot does leave a sour taste in our mouths, though we can only cross our fingers to hope that Crash 4’s skins and cosmetics aren’t as tiresome and invasive Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled’s Grand Prix events. I like Crash Bandicoot, don’t get me wrong, but I’d like to play other games too without being tied into some unnecessary battle pass mechanic.

We’ll find out more about these in-game purchases as we get closer to launch. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will launch on October 2nd for PS4 and Xbox One, with other platforms being considered by Activision. Will you be picking it up? Sound off in the comments.
