A tragic turn of events has seen CM Punk relinquish his AEW World Championship less than a week after winning it at Double or Nothing 2022. CM Punk revealed on this week’s episode of Rampage that he is unable to continue to compete and defend the championship and therefore will make way for an interim champion worthy of carrying on its legacy.

Punk listed names such as Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson as wrestlers that he’d like to see take over his reign going forward. Tony Khan later built on this and confirmed that a huge battle royal will take place on Dynamite next week to determine who will go on to face Mox for the interim AEW Championship. The winner of that match will go on to Forbidden Door to face Hiroshi Tanahashi in Punk’s place, and once Punk is cleared to return, they will then vie against one another to determine the true champion.

A tearful Punk went on to describe his injury as a ‘broken wheel’, he will require surgery on his foot to repair the damage done. Here’s hoping that the surgery will be a success and Punk will return better than ever.
