In an exclusive with Entertainment Weekly, Charlie Kaufman previews his Netflix film I’m Thinking of Ending Things (which is on my list for 10 Netflix Original Movies to watch in 2020), also offering images of the pivotal locations in the movie for us to ogle at.
The film is based on the psychological thriller of the same name by Iain Reid. Kaufman’s film stars Jesse Plemons as Jake, and Jessie Buckley as his girlfriend, who drive out to meet his parents (David Thewlis and Toni Collette). When the two arrive at the parent’s house, this is when we truly get a sense that things aren’t what they seem to be.
“The house represents the imagined interaction between someone you bring home to your parents — that panic that is twoheaded at that point,” he teases. “You’re worried about what they’re going to think about your parents, and you’re always worried about what your parents are going to think of them.”
Having read the book a while back, I can safely say the best way to head into this film is to not know anything, because it is quite the experience. The title leads you in one direction, and then at the end we take a sharp turn and just crash blindly. It will all make sense when you watch the film, or if you want to jump start your experience, then reading the book is always an option.
If not, then you will have to wait till September 4, 2020 to see what the hype is all about.
