Captain Tsubasa

Bandai Namco’s latest anime adaptation launches today on PC, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch, but Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a little bit different from the usual 3D arena brawlers, as this game takes to the football pitch to deliver some old-school, arcade action. Check out our gameplay footage below, complete with comments calling me a huge noob.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a faithful recreation of one of Japan’s most popular anime/manga properties, with players controlling teams from the series to compete in “standard” football matches. We say standard, it’s not every match you can shoulder check your opponent like you’re in a WWE match without the ref blowing his whistle, or score 40 yard screamers because you were imbued with the power of an eagle, but there you go.

Rise of New Champions will come complete with two complete story modes. Episode: Tsubasa, as you’ll probably guess, is a retelling of the events of the series, while Episode: New Hero will see you creating your own avatar and joining one of three prestigious footballing high schools. It’s like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but for the beautiful game, and yes I’ve made this joke before.

We played Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions at a press event at the start of 2020, back before the world seemed to just collapse in on itself. The early build had some flaws, but there’s potential here for an enjoyable kickabout with your mates.

Captain Tsubasa will likely be a faithful recreation of the franchise that’ll appease fans of the series, and it might just raise awareness and attract new fans to the series. That said, the potential is there for Rise of New Champions to become a legitimate, fresh take on the football game genre. Some work will have to be done on the passing game, but aside from that, Tsubasa could be a winner. We’ll have to see when it launches later this year on PC, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.
